The island takes its name from Captain William Hilton, an English sea captain who charted the headland in 1663. For most of the following three centuries it belonged to rice and indigo planters, then to Gullah communities descended from the people enslaved on those plantations. Development arrived late. That restraint shaped the water as much as the land.
