Charles Fraser built a lighthouse that no ship was ever meant to steer by. Completed in 1970 on the edge of Calibogue Sound, the 90-foot red-and-white tower was a developer's ornament rather than a navigational aid, mocked at the time as vanity and now the most photographed structure on the island.

The Sea Pines Resort that surrounds it began in 1957, when Fraser inherited timber land his father had bought for logging and chose instead to plan a residential community under the canopy. Byrnes Bridge had opened in 1956, ending the island's reliance on ferries. Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are resident here rather than migratory, and researchers have catalogued several hundred individuals by dorsal-fin notch across the estuary. Some practise strand feeding, driving mullet onto mud banks and hauling half out of the water to take them — a behaviour documented in only a few places on earth. Broad Creek, the tidal estuary that nearly bisects the island, threads through spartina marsh that functions as nursery ground for shrimp, blue crab and juvenile fish.
Harbour Town has stayed a working basin. The Heritage golf tournament arrived in 1969 and still finishes beneath the tower each spring; shrimp boats and sailing yachts share the same channel markers. Among Hilton Head Island landmarks it is the one built entirely in living memory, and the one whose meaning has shifted most — from a marketing device for lot sales to the departure point for the Lowcountry wildlife cruises that read this estuary for visitors.
